You certainly do not need to be Tom Dwan or Phil Ivey to make money playing poker and to turn it into a career. My most successful periods have come during the past twelve months when I stopped trying to be some sort of big shot and started concentrating on the forms of poker which I liked the best and felt that I could control. Thus my main level these days is NL100 full ring of which I multi-table them. I sometimes stray into NL200 games but because my main game is full ring then there is far less action at these games than in six max games. However you as the player have certain advantages at your disposal in your quest to play poker for a living. Firstly the sites themselves offer new players sign up bonuses and rakeback. So you could quite easily be making $1000 a month just in sign up bonuses from site to site. This is a pretty good start on your way to becoming a pro. Likewise if you were on a very good rakeback deal! I have known some players who were making several thousand dollars a month in rakeback. This is why if someone tells me that they are not beating the games on the level then what they are basically saying is that they can only beat them with rakeback. However at the lower levels then there are far more weaker players than what you think and this is especially the case in no limit hold’em. At levels like NL100 and NL50 then there are still plenty of players to go round who simply do not understand no limit hold’em deeply enough and the ones who think that they do still have a lot of work to do on their games. Do not get me wrong here; I am not saying that my game is super sharp because it isn’t. But then again I have always been very good when it comes to being able to make money. However my real strengths in poker have been planning and preparing and my earlier years in the gambling industry have really stood me in good stead here. I learned the hard way what bad runs can do and how important planning really is. So what has been the key turning point for me personally? Well one huge turning point came when I reached a stage of my career where I was totally indifferent to other people’s ideas and opinions. This is not meant to sound pompous or bigheaded but it just is what it is. When you reach a style of play that makes you money then what is the point in listening to other peoples views and opinions….even those of people who make more than you or who are better than you? Some people may argue that this is how you improve but that isn’t always the case. Sometimes knowing something can be negative as well as positive if it drags you away from something that you are doing successfully……remember the old saying of not changing a winning formula.
Poker as a career is closer than what you think
