The Dutch Government has made the monumental statement that they intend to reform the countries online gambling laws. This turn about has come via the countries new coalition government, who are taking a much more sensible approach to a pastime already enjoyed by thousands of Dutch nationals each and every day.

For some time, many of the globes well-known gaming companies have tried to legally break into this market,  with Ladbrokes and Betfair taking their argument all the way to the European Union Court of Justice albeit unsuccessfully, in a bid to take those Dutch bets.

The new coalition government in The Netherlands took over last October and are looking to follow in the footsteps of other European countries like France, Italy and Sweden,  who have decided to regulate online gambling and offer licences to operate within their jurisdiction.

Jaap Oosterveer, a spokesperson for the Dutch Ministry of Public Safety and Justice said, “It is a big shift (in policy), but this is a new government with a more liberal approach.”

The previous Dutch Government had been opposed to any expansion of online gambling, although quite happy to allow state run lotteries and land-base gambling venues to operate. Using a Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act similar to that of the one being currently used in the U.S.A, Dutch Banks could not conduct financial transactions with foreign online casino sites.
